HAUNTING

IN SITU ANIMATED DRAWING

DURATION 2 MINUTES 14

2021

From 1884 to 1922, billionaire Sarah Winchester had her 8-bedroom ranch extended 24 hours a day, 7 days a week, 365 days a year, until her death. The house then had 160 rooms. She never hired an architect, drawing the blueprints herself in the middle of the night for the next day, without any consistency. What had to be built often meant destroying what had been done the day before, which led to architectural absurdities such as staircases leading to the ceiling, doors opening onto nothing, and floor-level windows.

Starting with an A4 sheet of paper and a very basic drawing of a house, I drew and erased for several weeks on the same sheet, photographing each change in the drawing and erasing the previous drawing each time.

This process continued for the duration of the exhibition, and gradually it began representing the architecture of the exhibition space : the lines of the drawing began to follow the lines formed by the bricks on the wall onto which the animation was projected.
